Mask Making and Masked Performance
This page was created to provide mask work samples for Surel's Place Residency Application.
This series of photos are some examples of my masks and mask making process. Masks are in various phases of completion. The reddish masks are completed paper mache; white masks have been spackled and are ready for painting; and painted masks are complete with finishing touches such as hair.
The masks shown on the left proved to be suitable for performance even though they have not been completely painted and finished. (In fact, many audience members insisted that they need not be painted; they were expressive and transformative as-is.)
A modern day mask piece called The Ballad of Quick Dick McGripp was the basis of my recent residency at Celebration Barn Theater.
